Picture Book Pick: The Reading Promise

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

“It wasn’t about the books so much. It was about each other.” - Alice Ozma

Are our kids ever too old to be read to?

Alice doesn’t think so. Her dad read to her every night for 15 minutes, until the day she left for college.

It inspired her so that at 23, she’s penned a book of her own: “The Reading Promise: My Father and the Books We Shared”.

Thank you, Cathie M., for sharing this story with us!

Picture Book Pick: You Are Special

Monday, September 13th, 2010

It’s inevitable. At some point(s) in time, every child feels not good enough, different, left out.

The key character, Punchinello, in Max Lucado’s “You Are Special” struggles with feeling the same.

Living amongst other wooden Wemmicks who are far more glamorous and successful than he, Punchinello feels woefully unworthy.

Until… he meets Eli the woodcarver, who gently helps Punchinello understand how very special and loved he is.

Spend a few minutes in the world of Punchinello and the other Wemmicks – it’s a beautiful experience.

A Frieda B. PICTURE BOOK PICK

From time to time, we see a picture book so wonderful that we must share it with all of you.

Lass: A Story for Children is such a book.

Those familiar with the best-selling Lessons From a Sheepdog will be familiar with author Phillip Keller. Lass is a re-telling of his based-on-a-true story, especially for children.

Lass, the pure-bred border collie, is rescued from her unhappy life in the city by W. Phillip Keller who owns a sheep ranch. There Lass learns about trust, obedience, and faithfulness under the patient guidance of her new master. Through Phillip’s unfailing love, Lass is transformed from an undisciplined pet into a magnificent sheepdog.

This story illustrates for both children and adults the unconditional love that God has for each of us. There are questions at the end of the book to help parents and children discover more about God’s love and how He can help them become all that He has planned for them.

A sure favorite for both boys and girls, this book will be a blessing to any family!
