Imagine: What would your school, your community look like if all children dreamed big and believed in their stories? This question is at the heart of the Frieda B. The Whole Child ELA/SEL curriculum. Life and learning matter most to a child when a child believes s/he matters. So that's where we begin; encouraging autonomy and community, belief and belonging.

FBTWC utilizes the Frieda B. series of children's books to creatively explore and encourage each child's unique story while simultaneously meeting English Language Arts (ELA) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) standards and initiatives.

This Professional Development session, led by Frieda B. author, Renata Bowers and based on the FBTWC Lesson Plan for the second book of the series, Frieda B. and the Zillabeast, specifically will delve into ELA and SEL objectives related to fostering community by putting others first (see objectives detailed in images at left). The session will cover engaging and creative methods for helping each child better understand and internalize:

* to whom do we have responsibility, and why? (family, friends, pets, teachers, classmates, etc.)
* when you always put yourself first, people don't easily trust or help you;
* when you take care of others, others are happy to take care of you;
* our school and classroom is a community... we all feel safe and included and important when we take care of each other;
* you can put others first and still have time for your interests and dreams.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of this session and are welcomed to spend time afterwards enjoying The Story Barn retail store and seven acres of land.

Schools interested in making FBTWC available to all staff are welcomed to purchase the comprehensive FBTWC Toolkit. Author visits, family events, private PD, staff team-building also are available. To learn more, visit FriedaB.com/ES

Frieda B. and the Zillabeast Story Summary: Frieda B. loves books. So much so that she often becomes part of them; the words spring up under her feet and the pictures and characters become a world she’s able to walk right into. Frieda B. and the Zillabeast begins with just such an adventure. Frieda and Zilla enter a marvelous storyworld of classic fairytales. Yet with each turn of the page, Zilla grows bigger, bristlier, and growlier – until a hair-raising encounter with Little Red Riding Hood puts everyone on edge. What turned him into a Zillabeast? And what can bring him back to the sweet Zilla we all know and love? The answers to those questions reveal a lot about the importance of putting others first… and the love we welcome in to our lives when we do.
