This 2-Part Foundational Virtual Professional Development session, led by Frieda B. author, Renata Bowers is based on her sixth book Frieda B. Knows It's True... You Are Free to Be YOU, which she wrote as both story and teaching tool. Our shelves are filled with stories… marvelous, engaging tools that, through compelling characters and storylines, help us to better see who we are and believe in who we can be. Bowers leads us through an exploration of how elements of good stories hold beautiful and powerful potential for building a culture of authentic autonomy, community and resilience – for students, staff and families – within a classroom and school.

Session One. Belief & Belonging: Nurturing the Whole Child.  Life and learning matter to a child when a child believes she matters.” [Renata Bowers] Authentic autonomy and community – belief and belonging – are the bedrock of a child who feels safe and encouraged to explore his own unique purpose and place in the world. When we help a child align his innate gifts (intellectual, social, emotional, physical, spiritual) with needs in the world around him, we nurture the whole child and help him build a story for himself of purpose and worth.
Session Two. The Hero’s Journey: Choosing Resilience. “Conflict is inevitable. How we respond to it is a choice.”[Renata Bowers] The Hero’s Journey is the most beloved narrative style in all of storytelling.  It reminds us and helps us to know within ourselves that, when facing conflict, we can simultaneously acknowledge and deny corrosive emotions in the pursuit of a greater good (think: a firefighter who denies fear to run into a burning building). Resilience is the root and building block of all great stories and people. It can be studied and applied at any and every age… it can redefine a person and an entire community of people.

Through her national-award-winning Frieda B. series of picture books, children's author Renata Bowers has developed an engaging method for utilizing written story to inspire the human story within every child... to help each child believe in self (autonomy) and to be part of something good (community), even in the midst of challenging chapters (resilience).

The Frieda B. The Whole Child (FBTWC) ELA/SEL Toolkit & author-led PD is built on this method and book series. FBTWC provides an array of story-based resources to PK-5 educators for sharing with students, staff and families the beauty of using STORIES to move toward meaningful, relevant academic and social success... all the while complementing and enhancing the school's existing English Language Arts (ELA) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) standards and initiatives.

Frieda B. Knows It's True... You Are Free to Be YOU Story Summary: It’s true: You, dear reader, are free to be the one-of-a-kind, never-before-told, amazing and very important story you carry right inside you. Within the other Frieda B. books, Frieda B. shares her own story and dreams and adventures with you. But in this book, Frieda wants to celebrate the story of YOU. So come along as we meet Frieda’s favorite librarian, Ms. Foster, and embark on an adventure better than any other… discovering, exploring, dreaming about - and capturing in your very own storybook - who YOU uniquely are free to be. 8" x 10".
