This Virtual Professional Development session, led by Frieda B. author, Renata Bowers is based on the FBTWC Lesson Plan for the first book of the series, Frieda B. A Great Day at the Dog Park. Bowers wrote this story to encourage children to use their imagination to see things differently… not only physical objects as represented in the first half of the book, but people. When we see others not only with our eyes, but with our hearts, we open up our imaginative ability to empathize.  Pair that with building a strong emotional vocabulary, and we open the door for a child to enter into authentic community.  Delving into ELA and SEL objectives related to empathy, this session will provide engaging and creative methods for helping each child better understand and internalize:

* consequences to self and others of viewing people with only our eyes;
* choices and actions regarding empathy that lead to authentic autonomy and community;
* the significance of building competence and confidence in emotional vocabulary;
* the significance of encouraging and complementing the resilience in others.

Through her national-award-winning Frieda B. series of picture books, children's author Renata Bowers has developed an engaging method for utilizing written story to inspire the human story within every child... to help each child believe in self (autonomy) and to be part of something good (community), even in the midst of challenging chapters (resilience).

The Frieda B. The Whole Child (FBTWC) ELA/SEL Toolkit & author-led PD is built on this method and book series. FBTWC provides an array of story-based resources to PK-5 educators for sharing with students, staff and families the beauty of using STORIES to move toward meaningful, relevant academic and social success... all the while complementing and enhancing the school's existing English Language Arts (ELA) and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) standards and initiatives.

Frieda B. A Great Day at the Dog Park Story Summary:

Zilla kindly approaches. But the boy lashes out, yelling for Zilla to go away and leave him alone. Frieda implores her parents to take action and yell at the boy who is “bad, bad, bad, bad.” In response, her dad takes her hand and opens his heart… showing Frieda and the boy – and the reader – that authentic connection, compassion and communication is the pathway to unleashing the hero in us all. 8" x 10".
